The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday hit out at the Narendra Modi-led central government amid a global backlash over alleged derogatory remarks made against Prophet Mohammad by now-removed BJP spokespersons. The remarks have stirred a row domestically and abroad. In a short tweet, the AAP said India, the great nation, is facing humiliation because of Modi. “My India is great. Because of Modi, it is enduring humiliation,” read a loosely translated tweet by the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. The tweet comes in the backdrop of protests registered by west Asian countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iran. While the government has called the remarks “views of fringe elements”, the BJP has removed two of its party functionaries, while stating that it respects all religions. The saffron party on Sunday suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled its Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal.Sharma said her comments had been in response to “insults” made against the Hindu god Shiva. “If my words have caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings of anyone whatsoever, I hereby unconditionally withdraw my statement,” she said in a tweet.
The Opposition has launched a massive attack on the BJP-led Centre over the issue with leaders from the Congress, CPM, AAP and AIMIM putting out statements in this regard.
Earlier in the day, AAP leader and Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said the BJP has led the country to such a situation that even “small countries are now challenging the great nation of India”.
In a tweet, he said every Indian is pained by it and “the sorrow is endless”.Meanwhile, Kejriwal is in Modi’s home state Gujarat and taking part in the party’s Tiranga Yatra in Mehsana.‘Because of Modi…’: AAP on backlash over Prophet remarks by suspended BJP leaders
