The National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) celebrated 30 years of the Nifty 50 Index, India’s flagship equity benchmark and one of the most widely tracked indices globally. The milestone event was held at NSE’s Exchange Plaza in Mumbai and brought together market leaders, representatives of Nifty 50 companies, regulators and participants from across India’s capital markets ecosystem.

SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey attended the event as the Chief Guest, while writer and strategic thinker S Gurumurthy, who is also an Independent Director at the Reserve Bank of India, was the Distinguished Guest of Honour. They were joined by NSE Chairman Srinivas Injeti and MD & CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan.

Addressing the gathering, Pandey said that celebrating three decades of the Nifty 50 was not merely marking the history of an index but recognising the broader journey of India’s capital markets and the institutions that support them. He noted that over the years, the Nifty has become a mirror of corporate India, a barometer of investor sentiment and a guide to the direction of the markets.

Gurumurthy highlighted the unique evolution of India’s financial system, stating that the country’s markets have developed through strong institutions, effective regulatory oversight and a culture of prudence.

This combination, he said, has helped create a framework where growth and stability coexist while strengthening transparency, accountability and investor protection.

Speaking on the occasion, NSE Chairman Srinivas Injeti said the Nifty 50 has evolved from a scientific index introduced in the mid-1990s into a powerful symbol of India’s economic momentum and investor confidence. Chauhan added that the index has played a transformative role in the development of India’s derivatives market and passive investment ecosystem, including index funds and ETFs.

Launched on April 22, 1996, with a base date of November 3, 1995, the Nifty 50 tracks the performance of 50 large and liquid companies across key sectors of the Indian economy. From November 1995 to February 27, 2026, the Nifty 50 Total Return Index delivered a CAGR of 12.74 per cent, while the Price Return Index recorded 11.23 per cent.

As part of the celebrations, NSE released a white paper titled “Nifty 50: Thirty Years of India’s Market Evolution” and launched the book Nifty Panorama by Urvish Kantharia. Representatives of Nifty 50 companies and asset management companies were felicitated during the event, which concluded with the ceremonial ringing of the NSE bell.
