NEW YORK — In a move to stabilize operations at the nation’s busiest travel hubs, the federal government has begun deploying U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to assist the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at airport checkpoints.
The deployment comes as the Department of Homeland Security enters its sixth week of a partial shutdown, which has led to a significant increase in TSA officer call-outs and resignations. Travelers at major airports, including JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, have reported record-long wait times, with some security lines stretching well into terminal lobbies.
Focus on Logistics and Crowd Control
While ICE agents will be visible at security perimeters, officials clarified that their role is strictly supportive. Because they lack specific TSA training for operating X-ray machinery or conducting specialized physical screenings, their duties will primarily include:
* Crowd Management: Directing the flow of passengers in high-traffic areas.
* Document Verification: Checking passenger IDs and boarding passes.
* Exit Lane Monitoring: Guarding secure exits to prevent unauthorized entry.
National Rollout
New York is not the only region seeing this shift. Similar deployments have been confirmed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, and Houston’s Bush Intercontinental.
The administration, led by border czar Tom Homan, stated the goal is to “maintain order and ensure the American public can continue to travel safely despite the current funding challenges.”
Mixed Reactions
The move has sparked a divide among travelers and lawmakers. Some passengers expressed relief at the prospect of shorter lines, while critics and labor unions have raised concerns regarding the use of “non-TSA personnel” in sensitive security environments. Additionally, the President has directed that these agents remain highly visible and not wear face masks while on duty.
Traveler Advisory: If you are flying out of the New York area this week, authorities recommend arriving at the airport at least three hours before domestic flights to account for fluctuating wait times.
