Auto theft continues to be a growing concern in Peel Region, with police reporting 70 stolen vehicles in Mississauga and Brampton just 10 days into 2026. The early figures suggest the problem that escalated over the past few years has carried into the new year, raising concerns for residents across both cities. Data released by Peel Regional Police shows that between January 1 and January 10, a total of 44 vehicles were reported stolen in Mississauga, while Brampton accounted for 26 cases. As of January 10, only one case had been solved, with 68 investigations still ongoing and one case listed as unsolved. Most of the stolen vehicles were passenger cars, accounting for 58 of the total, along with 11 trucks and one motorcycle. Police statistics also point to specific locations experiencing repeated incidents. Over the past 10 days, Great Lakes Drive recorded four reported thefts, while Brisdale Drive, City Centre Drive, and Hurontario Street each saw two incidents. Investigators note that identifying these patterns helps police deploy resources more effectively, but residents in these areas are being urged to remain especially vigilant. The spike in thefts follows an already troubling year. In 2025 alone, 4,722 vehicles were reported stolen across Mississauga and Brampton. Recent cases from late 2025 and early 2026 include dozens of stolen vehicles recovered through targeted police operations, thefts linked to dealership break ins, and arrests following traffic stops involving stolen vehicles.

Peel Regional Police say many of the thefts continue to occur in residential areas, particularly from driveways. As a result, officers are encouraging residents to take additional precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a target. Parking vehicles in locked garages when possible remains one of the most effective deterrents. Police also recommend the use of steering wheel locks as a visible barrier, installing locks on vehicle data ports to prevent electronic reprogramming, and investing in reliable video surveillance systems. Ensuring cameras are properly positioned and operational both day and night can help provide crucial evidence if a theft occurs. Authorities emphasize that while investigations continue, community awareness and prevention play an important role in addressing the ongoing rise in vehicle thefts across Peel Region.
