A movie theatre in Oakville, Ontario, has halted screenings of Indian films following two violent incidents in the past week, including an attempted arson and a shooting. Film.ca Cinemas announced the withdrawal of Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 and They Call Him OG after police confirmed the theatre had been targeted twice.
The first attack occurred on September 25, when suspects carrying red gas cans tried to ignite a fire at the theatre’s entrance, causing moderate exterior damage. Security footage showed suspects arriving in SUVs and pouring flammable liquid before setting it alight. A second incident took place on October 2, when a suspect fired several rounds through the theatre’s entrance doors. Police believe both were targeted attacks and are investigating, though they have not confirmed a motive.
Film.ca CEO Jeff Knoll initially vowed the theatre would continue showing South Asian films, calling the attacks an attempt to intimidate. However, in a later statement, the theatre acknowledged evidence suggesting a link between screening Indian films and the incidents, leading them to suspend showings “to protect our community.” Their website now lists no South Asian titles.
The violence has prompted wider repercussions. York Cinemas, another Ontario theatre, has also announced it will stop screening Indian films “until further notice,” citing the safety of staff and guests. The theatre assured customers that all advance ticket purchases would be refunded.
The back-to-back attacks have raised concerns about public safety and growing tensions spilling over into Canada’s cultural spaces, leaving theatre operators caught between community demand and the need for security.
