U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by claiming that Tylenol use during pregnancy is tied to autism, a statement strongly rejected by doctors and health officials. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the common painkiller, also known as acetaminophen or paracetamol, is “no good” for pregnant women and should only be used for severe fever. He urged women to “fight like hell” to avoid it, remarks that critics warn could cause unnecessary fear among expectant mothers.
Medical organizations swiftly pushed back. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said Trump’s assertion is not supported by science, stressing that acetaminophen remains the safest option for pain relief during pregnancy. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting dismissed Trump’s claim, saying he trusted doctors over the president. Tylenol’s manufacturer, Kenvue, also defended the drug, noting there is no evidence linking it to autism and calling Trump’s comments deeply concerning.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued more cautious guidance, acknowledging some studies have suggested an association but emphasizing that no causal link has been established. The agency reminded doctors to balance risks while noting untreated pain and fever during pregnancy can also harm mothers and babies.
Researchers remain divided. A 2024 study of 2.4 million Swedish children found no connection between prenatal Tylenol use and autism. But a Harvard-led review of earlier studies suggested potential risks, leading some experts to recommend limiting use when possible. Still, most specialists agree that autism is caused by a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors, not a single drug.
Autism advocacy groups blasted Trump’s remarks as irresponsible, warning that misinformation undermines decades of research and stigmatizes autistic people. Public health experts also cautioned that unfounded claims from political leaders could discourage women from using safe treatments and create confusion at a time when accurate medical guidance is critical.
